New Bass and more happenings ..

Lets give a warm welcome to our newest member on bass, Mr Eli Sperling.
Eli is a huge reggae-head that has been playing bass for many years in both reggae and funk bands in the West Coast.
Eli comes to the NYC after living in both Portland and Tel Aviv.
It was definitely difficult coming to a conclusion since we got to jam with some really great players, but Eli definitely stood out.
Let's give him a big welcome !!

On the other side of the world El Pueblo's sax Jeremy Daneman is getting his Parade of One going down back in Cambodia.

What's the story ... Ina Funky Dub

"Ina Funky Dub" is a song that I am extremely proud of writing/producing.  The track was specifically written for the compilation "Funk Aid for Africa" compiled by Dj ObaH.
I got an email from Obah and he mentioned that he was reaching out to local artists that might be interested in donating a track to a compilation to be titled "Funk Aid for Africa."
The compilation was going to be widely sold and 100% of the proceeds were going to NextAid; an organization that funds "sustainable development projects for children in Africa."
When I heard this I said "We're down !"
The first part that was written was the bass line which is (in my opinion) a super hip bass line (!) and then rest followed.
In reality the best part of the track was that it went to help children in need, and we feel very proud to me musicians helping children with our music.
We've played the track many times live, but when we play it live we do it with a pretty cool arrangement in the intro that Lucas did. There's a different intro in the recorded version...oh and we usually play it pretty fast live !

Whats the story ...Despojo

Despojo is a song that appeared out of nowhere.  Kinda trippy, right?
I was looking through my stack of sheet music and sketches and I stumbled upon this little piece of sheet music with a song called Despojo.
I grabbed the guitar and starting playing what was written and I was like "wow! thats a cool little melody!"
I had written (whenever I wrote the song) directions that said "Latin on A part" and then "Reggae on B part" so I pretty much kept my original directions on the arrangement.
The reality is that I don't remember writing this song, maybe I was in some sort of trance?? Or maybe I just have a really bad memory.

Despojo by elpueblosound

Below is El Pueblo playing Despojo live at Southpaw. Kevin Sherman on Bass and Paquito Cruz on Sax.
I animated the audio track with some cool images.

What's the story ... Tamarindo

The melody of this song just kinda came to me while I was in Costa Rica at Playa Tamarindo; hence the name.
Tamarindo is a beautiful beach in the Pacific side of Costa Rica with some of the most amazing sunsets I've ever seen.
I was visiting with some friends and the melody just kinda came to me (like most music I write), and it pretty much became my own personal soundtrack for the trip.
The melody is definitely very feel-good and laid back just like the trip was.
I  wanted to have the melody very early in the song and thats why the bass plays it at the beginning of the song.
When you  hear this track you're hearing Mike Montgomery on his upright.  We're super happy to say that Mike is back with El Pueblo here in NYC, he's now playing his electric bass.

check out the tune, and if you dig it, download it for free !

A good read ...

An excellent article by Larry Rohter about whats brewing in the music industry.

Record Industry Braces for Artists’ Battles Over Song Rights

...after that article be sure to check this one out (also by Larry Rohter)

A Village Person Tests the Copyright Law

It's definitely going to be interesting to follow the developments of these cases since it'll probably lay the groundwork of the music industry for years to come....or may just just completely finish it.

While you're there make sure to check out their site for a huge collection of free mp3's as well as artist interviews, videos, album reviews and plenty more.

The Pier is the place to be and we are honored that they put our music up.

get it here:
A little info on the tracks:

"Cabarete" is a beach in the north coast of the Dominican Republic.  I (robert) was there visiting with some friends and the melody came to me while walking on the beach in the late afternoon. I kept humming it until I got to our place and was able to record it on my little recorder and when I got back to the States was able to finish the entire song.

I don't actually remember writing "Tatica's Town." I think is one of those songs that just kinda pop-up and you find it on a piece of music-paper with a melody in it that you know you wrote, but don't actually remember writing it.  I do know that "Tatica's Town" is about Higuey; the small town I grew up in the East of the Dominican Republic.

7/8 at Shrine

It was a rainy night and the Shrine was not as packed as it usually is on a friday night but the fyah was definitely on !
We had an amazing time playing a pretty rocking set that included 2 guest singers.
Poor Mike (bass) fell of his bike just a couple of days before the show and he fractured two fingers in his right hand, luckily the break did not affect his Index and Middle fingers so he was still able to bring the fire that he always brings on the bass.
This is also the first show back with Mike since 2006 !
Everybody played a great show and perhaps more importantly had a great time.
The audience at the Shrine definitely showed their love on that tip bucket so many thanks to them !
We'll be back at Shrine in Sept.

Luis Dias

Today is Luis Dias' birthday.  He would have turned 59 this year.
He had a very strong influence on me (Robert) as a guitarrist, composer, and overall musician.
I had the honor of taking lessons with him onstage, and also got to share some laughs, some beers, and many moments of music enlightenment.
"Music Enlightenment" seems like a very abstract phrase; and it is. In fact, I don't think I could describe it; but those that got to be around him with an instrument in their hands understand what I mean.

He is a major influence for El Pueblo. It's not a direct or obvious one, but its there. It's not an influence in the way we play our music or rhythms that we choose to play, but more about the way that our music is written, presented, and performed. An overall idea of your place in society as a musician. Again, abstract.

I always say, and perhaps others have as well, "Luis Dias was the only guitarist in the world that could play Blues, and make the guitar sound Dominican."  And I dont mean that he put a lil' Bachata riff over it, I mean make it sound Dominican even though he was still playing the Blues.

Here's a clip from Transporte Urbano the best Dominican Rock band EVER and one of the most important bands in the American continent that most have never heard.

Happy birthday Lui !

(by the way picture on top its him playing my blue strat. He use to love that guitar ! I always think of him when I play it)
